At Obesity Outled by the outstanding Dr. Luis Cano, we are proud to offer a wide range of bariatric surgery solutions at our clinics in Tijuana, Veracruz and Tuxtepec. However, we recognize that each individual is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. That is why we provide a variety of procedures, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here, we explore some of the most common types of bariatric surgery.
Gastric Sleeve
The gastric sleeve is a popular type of bariatric surgery that has gained recognition due to its effectiveness and low complication rate. In this procedure, about 80% of the stomach is removed, drastically reducing its size and limiting the amount of food that can be consumed.
AdvantagesGastric sleeve is known for its efficacy and has a relatively low complication rate compared to other procedures.
DisadvantagesAlthough less complex than other procedures, the gastric sleeve is still a major surgery with its own risks and recovery.
Gastric Bypass
The gastric bypass is another common type of bariatric surgery that combines restriction of stomach size with intestinal malabsorption. During this procedure, a small gastric pouch is created that connects directly to the small intestine, thus bypassing most of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine.
AdvantagesThis procedure can achieve significant weight loss by reducing both the stomach's ability to store food and the intestine's ability to absorb calories.
DisadvantagesGastric bypass is a more complex procedure than gastric sleeve and may have a longer recovery time and higher risks of complications.
3. OAGB (One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass)
The OAGBalso known as mini-gastric bypassis a simplified version of the traditional gastric bypass. Unlike gastric bypass, which involves the creation of two anastomoses (connections) in the small intestine, OAGB requires only one anastomosis, simplifying the procedure and reducing recovery time.
AdvantagesLike gastric bypass, OAGB can result in significant weight loss. However, it has the advantage of being a simpler procedure with a shorter recovery time.
DisadvantagesAlthough OAGB may have fewer complications than traditional gastric bypass, it still presents some risks, including the possibility of long-term nutritional deficiencies.
4. SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Switch)
The SADI-S is a procedure that combines restriction of stomach size with intestinal malabsorption, similar to gastric bypass. However, unlike gastric bypass, SADI-S is performed in a single surgical step, which reduces surgery time and exposure to risk.
AdvantagesAs with the other procedures, SADI-S can result in significant weight loss. In addition, because it is performed in a single surgical step, it can reduce surgery time and exposure to risk.
DisadvantagesAs with all bariatric surgery procedures, SADI-S comes with its own list of possible complications, which should be discussed with your bariatric surgeon.
Each of these procedures has its own advantages and disadvantages, and what works best for you will depend on your individual needs and circumstances. At Obesity OutWe work closely with each patient to help them make the most informed decision possible. If you are considering bariatric surgery, feel free to contact us to discuss your options.
